Hi! I’m Nakita and I ran a small firm practice for seven years. I co-founded the firm after a personal tragedy and realized as a young professional that I had a lot to learn. When I was running my firm I was on multiple boards (both as a director and as chair), and was always trying to get more time out of the day.
My fascination with software and streamlining came from interacting with other firm leaders and realizing we were struggling with similar issues. Here are some of the things I heard in my conversations with firm leaders who'd been practicing for a while that made me start searching for a better software to streamline managing our company:
"We track the tasks for the team in a shared excel file. It gets corrupted often so we save multiple versions.”
"There's only a few of us so I just let my employees use my computer to log their time directly in Quickbooks. It can take about two hours or so a week so I find other things to do around the office" (2hrs x 52wks = 104 hours, non-computer time)
“We have 3 principals and they like to do their own thing so we have multiple contact spreadsheets. I spend about 4-5 hours just merging the spreadsheet back together once a quarter” (5hrs x 4qtrs = 20 hours, reediting spreadsheets)
If your company is doing any of those things and you love it then by all means keep doing what you're doing. However, if you're like me and struggled to figure out a more profitable way to run your firm keep exploring this site.
I’ve since left small firm practice to join a medium sized firm and many of the systems and lessons learned are still valid. All that said, I hope this site saves you some time and provides you with some valuable insights!
